Marangu Route: Full 5-Day Itinerary

Itinerary for 5 Days Marangu

Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
  • Elevation: 1,860 m → 2,720 m
  • Distance / time: ~8 km, 3-5 hours
  • Habitat: Montane rainforest

After registering at the gate, you follow a wide, well-kept path through dense, humid forest. Expect tall trees, ferns, moss, and the chance of colobus and blue monkeys. The trail climbs steadily to Mandara Hut, a cluster of A-frame cabins with bunk beds. A short side trip leads to Maundi Crater for views over the plains.

Tips: Walk pole pole (slowly) and keep rain gear within reach.

Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
  • Distance / time: ~12 km, 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Heath and moorland

The forest gives way to heather, giant lobelias and open moorland, with Kibo and Mawenzi coming into view. The path is long but gradual. Horombo Hut sits on a wide slope with big views, often above the clouds, and the sunset lights up the summit.

Tips: Drink plenty of water. Altitude symptoms can start here, so tell your guide about any headache.

Day 3: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut
  • Elevation: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
  • Distance / time: ~10 km, 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert (the Saddle)

You climb through the last of the vegetation onto the Saddle, a high, barren plain between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is bare rock and dust, the wind is strong and the air is thin. At Kibo Hut you eat an early dinner and try to sleep for a few hours before the midnight start.

Tips: Prepare your layers, headlamp and water before lying down. Rest even if you can’t sleep.

Day 4: Kibo Hut → Gilman’s Point → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,685 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
  • Distance / time: ~21 km, 12-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic summit zone → moorland

You start around midnight by headlamp and climb a steep scree path in extreme cold, often -10 to -20 °C with wind chill. After several hours you reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim as the sky lightens. Another 1-2 hours along the rim leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, ideally at sunrise. You then descend all the way to Horombo Hut for the night, after a very long day.

Tips: Trekking poles help the descent. Keep your phone and camera warm, because batteries die fast.

Day 5: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate
  • Elevation: 3,720 m → 1,860 m
  • Distance / time: ~20 km, 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland → rainforest

A long but gentle walk down through moorland and then forest, retracing your steps past Mandara Hut. At Marangu Gate you sign out and collect your summit certificate (green for Gilman’s Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Your crew celebrates, and you tip them. You then transfer to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper meal.

Tips: Bring tips for the crew and keep your certificate dry.
